Our Story

Hale Nalu Coffee · Kaneohe, Hawaii

A Family That Loves
The Windward Side

Hale Nalu started the way most good things do around here — slowly, outdoors, and a lot of trial and error. We’re Aaron and Joni, and along with our boys, we’ve spent more mornings than we can count on this side of O‘ahu, watching the Ko‘olau mountains catch the first light over Kaneohe Bay.

If you’ve ever swum out into that impossibly clear, turquoise water and had a honu glide right past you like you’re old friends, you already understand why we never wanted to leave.

Why coffee

Coffee has been my thing for as long as I can remember — not just drinking it, but chasing the whole process. Sourcing it, roasting it, dialing in a brew until it’s right. There’s something about a slow Saturday morning, good beans, and nowhere to be that I’ve never gotten tired of. Hale Nalu is that obsession turned into something we could actually share with people, built around Hawaii’s coffee and the islands’ jewelry traditions side by side.

What else keeps us busy

Coffee’s the main event, but it’s not the only thing fermenting around our house. Here’s what else takes up the garage, the backyard, and most weekends:

Coffee, always

From sourcing single-origin beans to dialing in the roast — this is where Hale Nalu was born, and it’s still where I spend most of my early mornings.

Home brewing

There’s a fermenter going more often than not. Brewing beer taught me a lot of the patience that roasting coffee later demanded right back.

Smoking brisket

Low, slow, and worth the wait. If you stop by on a weekend, there’s a decent chance something’s been on the smoker since before sunrise.

The crew

Hale Nalu means “house of waves” — fitting, since most of our family decisions get made somewhere between the shoreline and the kitchen table.

Aaron Joni Our Boys

“We built this around the things we already loved — good coffee, the windward side, and a family that’s happiest outside.”
